This is one of the activities that I planned and created a write up for.
Materials needed at an old cereal box, fat notebook, glue sticks, craft paper, measuring tape/ruler & scissors.
You will need 4 squares approximately 4 ¾ x 6 ½ and 2 rectangles 1 ½ x 6 ½. The squares will be the front and back covers, two for the front and two for the back to make them thicker and more durable. The 2 rectangles 1 ½ x 6 ½ will be the binding of the book cover. Make sure that you situate the squares so that you will be able to use ONE cereal box for all 6 pieces. It helps to put them sideways rather than up straight. This part could be good for the older girls to do. It will help them to practice measuring. If there is not time though it would be a good idea to prepare this beforehand.
Use the glue liberally and take 2 of the 4, 4 ¾ x 6 ½ squares and glue them together. Do this with the other two as well. Also, glue the two 1 ½ x 6 ¼ rectangles together. As I said before this will make your cover more durable.
Now lay your pieces onto a 12x12 piece of scrapbook paper. Make sure that the two sides and the binding are very close together, but not touching. There needs to be space there to fold it later but not much space (look at the picture).
Again, use the glue liberally! Fold the sides of the paper onto the front and back cover after you have glued both the cover and the paper. This is going to be a lot like wrapping a present. To seal the glue softly go back and forth over the spot you want to stick with the back of a butter knife. The older girls can assist the younger girls to make sure the glue has sealed and isn’t coming up.
Once the sides are glued, Fold down the top of the scrapbook paper and do the same thing. Remember to use lots of glue!
Now fold the bottom of the paper up. And use the back of the butter knife to seal the glue.
Ta-da! You are almost done! Measure another piece of scrapbook paper to cover the rest of the cereal box that you can see. Glue that onto the book. Help the younger girls to cut this out, but let them pick out the color.
Now you can fold the book! Place the fat notebook onto the back cover and hot glue the back page of the fat notebook to the inside of the back cover. Obviously, have a leader or an older girl to use the hot glue gun.
Lastly, feel free to decorate it more or to leave it as it is!
We used the book, “Future Me? My Life and My Future” written by Tim Bugbird to give them ideas of what to write in their goal book!
